Avocet On February - 26 - 2010

After all the concerns about the weather we   were treated to another wonderful trip up the river on Sunday. It was a bit damp to start with but soon dried up and we even saw some sunshine!!

Most noticable was the lack of Avocets. Only 12 were found; but last week I saw nearly 500 on the River Exe. I assume they started their migration early and will stop off at suitable sites like the Exe and Poole Harbour on their way back to breeding sites in East Anglia, France and the Netherlands.

However the Spoonbills were still very much in evidence and put on a fine display. It would be terrific if we had them breeding on the Lynher one day. Six birds were seen including the two ringed birds seen earlier in the winter.

The link to the BTO Birdtrack site provides a full list of the birds seen on Sunday. 28feblist

Many thanks to all who’ve helped with this winters cruises, especially Derek, Nick, Nigel, Peter, Roland, Stuart and Tony whose excellent photos enliven this site.

SUNDAY MORNING UPDATE Todays cruise will go ahead as planned. The severe weather missed us  and the forecast is for 20mph winds and overcast with moderate to good visibility. Five Spoonbills were seen on the River Lynher yesterday, so lets hope they show well.

SATURDAY EVENING UPDATE The Met Office forecast for Plymouth issued at 18.00 says that the wind and rain will hit us overnight, clearing mid morning with good visibility from 1200 tomorrow. It will be windy but the Tamar Valley is reasonably sheltered above Cargreen and a NW wind shouldn’t affect the Lynher unduly. We may even get some sun in the afternoon! Let’s hope they’re right. Therefore it looks as though there’s a 90% chance of sailing tomorrow but phone after 8.00am if you want to check. See you tomorrow!!

In view of the weather forecast we will be monitoring the situation on Saturday and making a decision at 8am on Sunday morning. The river is reasonably sheltered from the wind above Saltash and the enclosed lower deck will provide protection from the rain. We will endeavor to sail as planned. Keep your fingers crossed!
